So you’re probably wondering why you’re on this website. Well, we hope you’re here to get to know us. We wrote this blog to let you know why you should continue to learn about Black Madison Voices and build a relationship with us.
Black Madison Voices started off as a writing group consisting of Black graduate students and faculty engaging in research and writing about the overall care and support of Black communities. We care about Black communities near and far and since we exist in Madison we care about what it means to be Black in this space. So, we received funding to be part of HEAL which is a large research grant that’s looking at equity in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine), specifically; however, we want this our work to expand beyond that project to support the Black Madison community.
This community-oriented approach led us to think more deeply about what it means to do humanizing research. Since we are so focused on community, we consider humanizing research within our engagement with the community, in our personal lives, and in our group as a collective. For example, we’ve dedicated our summer participating in restorative practices to really center on what this looks like moving forward and what this means for how we want to engage with you on this website. Here’s where you can learn more about us:
- Check out our mission and vision. We’re intentional about how doing humanizing research impacts everything we do.
- Check out more info on oral history where we map out why we feel oral histories are the best way for us to represent voices within Black Madison community.
- Lastly, visit our bios page. If you see us out in the community please say hi! We want to be as community-facing as possible and would love to engage with you.
We want you to explore the website because on each page we hope you can see why we do the work we do and what we’re hoping to accomplish within our project with HEAL and beyond. We look forward to connecting with you!
